How to roll sushi

Sushi and rolls win you over from the very first bite. And this dish becomes especially enjoyable when you manage to prepare it yourself. Today, Pronto sushi chefs will explain how to make delicious and filling sushi at home.

How to Make Sushi: Ingredients and Recipe

To prepare sushi rice, you will need:

  • 2 cups of Japanese short–grain rice;
  • 2.5 cups of water;
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar;
  • 1 tbsp sugar;
  • 1/2 tsp salt.

Choose any fillings you like:

  • Fresh fish (salmon, tuna, etc.);
  • Avocado;
  • Cucumber;
  • Crab sticks;
  • Cream cheese (such as Philadelphia);
  • Tobiko roe.

Additionally, prepare:

  1. Nori sheets (4–6 pieces);
  2. Soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger for serving.

And, of course, you will need:

  • A bamboo rolling mat;
  • A sharp knife;
  • A spoon for mixing rice.

How to Make Tasty Sushi: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Preparing the Sushi Rice

  1. Rinse the rice under running water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
  2. Cook the rice by adding 2.5 cups of water, bringing it to a boil, then reducing the heat to low. Cook under a lid for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it rest for another 10 minutes.
  3. Prepare the seasoning: combine rice vinegar, sugar and salt in a small saucepan. Heat until dissolved (do not boil).
  4. Cool the rice. Transfer it to a large bowl and pour the seasoning over it. Gently mix with a wooden or plastic spoon. Let the rice cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. Cut the fish into thin strips or small cubes.
  2. Slice cucumber and avocado into thin strips, about 1 cm wide.

Step 3: Forming the Rolls

How to roll sushi:

  1. Cover the bamboo mat with plastic wrap to prevent rice from sticking.
  2. Place a nori sheet shiny side down on the mat.
  3. Spread a handful of rice evenly over the nori, leaving 1–2 cm free on one edge.
  4. Place the filling (fish, avocado, cucumber, etc.) near the center.
  5. Lift the edge of the mat and start rolling tightly, pressing gently to form a firm roll.
  6. Cut the roll into 6–8 pieces using a sharp knife. Dip the knife in water to prevent sticking.

Step 4: Serving

Place the finished pieces on a plate and serve with soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger.
