How to hold sushi chopsticks correctly

How to properly hold chopsticks

Chopsticks are a traditional eating utensil in East Asian countries. They are used not only for sushi and rolls, but also for noodles, ramen, and rice. In Asia, children learn to eat with chopsticks from an early age — little ones easily master this tool. But how can you learn to use chopsticks as an adult and transition from training ones to regular ones? Pronto has prepared a guide for you!

Types of chopsticks: training and regular

First, let’s look at the difference between regular and training chopsticks.

Training chopsticks are designed for beginners who are just starting to master the technique. They usually have a special design — the sticks are connected by an additional element that helps keep them in the correct position.

Regular chopsticks do not have any assisting parts and are suitable for those who already know how to use this utensil.

How to properly hold chopsticks

Mastering the technique of holding chopsticks is fairly easy, but you should remember a few important details. The main thing is to feel comfortable and keep your movements natural.

Here are our tips:

  1. The bottom chopstick. Take one chopstick and place it between the base of your thumb and the upper part of your ring finger. This chopstick stays still throughout the meal.
  2. The top chopstick. Hold the second chopstick like a pen, placing it between your thumb and index finger. This chopstick is movable — you’ll use it to pick up pieces of sushi.

Make sure the tips of the chopsticks are aligned. Hold the chopsticks closer to the middle — this gives you better control and flexibility. While eating, only the top chopstick should move up and down, while the bottom one remains still.

How to pick up food with chopsticks

Once you learn how to hold chopsticks properly, the next step is understanding how to pick up food. It’s quite simple:

  • Press gently. When the chopsticks touch the food, squeeze them lightly. There’s no need to apply too much pressure — this could damage the sushi piece.
  • Control your movements. Start with lighter foods, such as sashimi or vegetables, and gradually move on to more complex items.
  • Balance the weight. Chopsticks work like levers, so it’s important to distribute pressure evenly to prevent food from slipping.

Now you know how to use chopsticks for sushi. It’s the perfect moment to order delicious rolls — Pronto’s delivery will bring them quickly and right on time!
